Namdae-mun

The Great South Gate of Seoul, Namdaemun, was originally built in 1398 as part of the construction of a wall to fortify the newly proclaimed capital. Although it is now commonly Known as the Great South Gate, the name written on its signboard is Sungnye-mun, the "Great of Exalted Cerenomy", Which is much more evocative. It is now designated as National Treasure No.1.

A minute's walk away, to the gate's southwest, is the Namdae-mun Market with basement shops, open stalls, and buildings with floors of all types of merchandise- from silk and china souvenirs to fresh flowers and camping goods. And, of course, lots and lots of ready-made clothes.
